A behind the scenes look into CoCo Zentner’s latest series, inspired by joyful memories of her time in Italy.
What destinations are on your travel bucket list? Having postponed a dream trip to Paris & Giverny (where many of Monet’s paintings were heavily influenced), I have a serious case of the travel bug itching to be cured. It’s no secret that the entire world has spent the past year aching for travel & leisure, so I won’t harp on the difficulties we’ve all faced. However, as an artist who is heavily influenced by adventuring to new cities & infusing myself within other cultures, finding inspiration throughout this past year was quite challenging from a creative perspective. Nonetheless, the solitude brought on by 2020 caused me to do a lot of reflection from past trips and has served to be a large inspiration for my upcoming collection, which I am giving you an exclusive behind-the-scenes look into!
After a crucial closet clean out, I stumbled across my college journal written during a summer spent studying abroad in Italy. It was filled with ticket stubs to museums and mementos from long dinners consuming a little too much wine & delicious food. Pictures taped to each page jogged my memory of how breathtaking the scenery was and as I began reminiscing on my younger, carefree days, a whirlwind of emotions flooded throughout me. I knew I had to put pen to paper (or in my case, paint to canvas) and create a series inspired by my fond memories of traveling to such vividly beautiful places.
While each painting was inspired by an experience of mine, the looseness & unknowingness of the exact location is intentional. I specifically chose colors & compositions intended to transport the viewer to a time and place that has brought them joy. Hopefully, the bright lemon yellow depicted in street scenes or the interpretation of sage green waves brings you to a place you yearn to go to or once visited. Pictures of yearly trips to San Miguel taken with best friends and a backpacking excursion I took with my husband have lined the walls of my studio over the past few months as I unpacked my feelings onto the canvas. These little keepsakes have been displayed on a board next to my easel, continuing to remind me of such fond recollections, now made into paintings that are near & dear to my heart.
Each mixed media painting is layered with acrylic, oil paint, pastel, and charcoal creating much texture and gives off a traditional with a twist impression. Ranging in sizes from 5” x 7” to 48” x 36” in a variety of color palettes, there is a painting for every space & person. Spoil your mom, spouse, or self this May with the perfect sentimental gift of a trip you once took together or a place you hope to visit down the road.
