How did you get started in interior design?
I practiced environmental law for 14 years before deciding to make a career switch. I had always wanted to be an interior designer but got sidetracked. Finally, I decided I had to follow my passion. I enrolled in classes at NYSID and started a business at the same time with a fellow student. Five years later, I went off on my own and KPD was born. I have been fortunate to have had some amazing projects and clients in the short time that I have been in business.

If you could give one piece of design advice for readers decorating their own homes, what would it be?
I would say that interior design is a tough business! People think that it is easy, but it is extremely demanding and complicated work. You have to be committed to client service and have business savvy, in addition to being creative and passionate, in order to be successful.

What has been your strongest source of design inspiration lately?
Travel! I recently came back from Paris and New Orleans and I can’t wait to go to London in a few months.

Colors vs. neutrals? Which way do gravitate towards and why?
Colors, of course! Color can make a room come alive and its occupants feel happy and warm. I am definitely not a grey girl.
If you could only adorn your home in one textile or fabric pattern, what would it be?
That’s a really tough question because I love so many textiles, but I guess I would have to say Peter Dunham Samarkand.
What is your current favorite book?
I hoard design books and love them all, but I just finished Frances Palmer’s book and I found it so inspiring. I am going to sign up for a pottery class!

If we met you at a party, what beverage would you have in your hand?
A nice glass of cabernet!
